Q: Do you and Elizabeth share any traits?Knightley: I think it’s impossible not to. I’m making a huge generalization here, but I’m assuming every woman will want to be her, which is this sort of incredibly passionate, clever, witty, intelligent, just amazing being. But also she is so annoying and you want to kick her up the ass and tell her to sort it out. So she’s flawed and that’s very human. I think when people see the film, they will see aspects of themselves in that character. Which is what’s so brilliant about Austen, I think you see yourself in all her characters. Strong women.
Q: What was your approach to the character of Darcy?
Macfadyen: I find it heartbreaking that he’s seen as very haughty and proud - and he is those things - but he’s a young man who is still grieving for his parents. He’s from an ancient family and has this huge responsibility, but it seemed to me that he’s still trying to work out who he is and how to be in the world. I found that very interesting, and I found him very sympathetic.
